Ronin Network is moving to Ethereum's layer 2 ecosystem, co-founder jihoz_axie announced today, setting a migration date of May 12.
The decision marks a strategic pivot from Ronin's original sidechain architecture, which was launched in 2021 to bypass Ethereum's high gas fees and congestion during the CryptoKitties era. jihoz_axie noted that Ethereum's scaling progress—via cheaper and more efficient L2s—now makes the migration practical.
Key benefits outlined for users, developers, and RON holders include:
- A proof-of-distribution system rewarding real on-chain activity with a portion of saved security costs. Registration is open now.
- Lower $RON inflation, dropping from over 20% in 2025 to approximately 5% in 2026.
- Enhanced treasury value capture: Gas fees in RON will flow to the treasury, and the Ronin market will increase its NFT volume fee from 0.5% to 1.25%. An additional 90 million RON from the former staking allocation will be redirected to the treasury.
jihoz_axie framed the move as a homecoming, tracing Ronin's origins to 2017 when Axie Infinity was born in a CryptoKitties Discord server on a congested Ethereum. The migration is scheduled for May 12.
